Between growing inflation and increasing layoffs, the world of retail faces challenging new headwinds. In this landscape it is important for leaders to proactively work to increase engagement, motivation, commitment, and performance in their organizations. This can be achieved by:

1. Adjusting the leadership style to serve employees. Managers can do so by asking “What can I do to make employees life easier?” and “How can I help employees grow?.”
2. Providing operational and strategic transparency. Including employees in decisions and discussions that managers are undertaking at a broader level, can increase engagement.
3. Advocate for (all) workers. Even employees who are leaving need support, if only to demonstrate to current employees that managers take employees and their issues seriously.
