Summary: CFR Early Insight #33

Leveraging systems thinking for sustainability and growth in retail with Kaisa Koskela-Huotari (SSE) & Suvi Nenonen (SSE).

1. Systems thinking enables us to see ourselves as part of the systems we inhabit (e.g., markets, communities, ecosphere). We cannot control these systems, but we can have an influence on them.

2. This broadens the strategic options when it comes to market strategies: in addition to increasing market share and entering new markets, firms can also proactively shape existing markets as well as make new markets around new products and services.

3. Understanding feedback loops and underlying mindsets in retail systems is a critical starting point for sustainable transformation. However, in shaping systems for improved sustainability outcomes, firms must be aware of the potential negative unintended consequences and the risk of pursuing marginal solutions that are “win-win” for everyone.
