Welcome to the Brown Bag Seminar in Economics organized by the Department of Economics, SSE. The seminar speaker is Kelly Ragan, SSE who will present "Without a Right to Abortion: The Power of the Pill Revisited".

Abstract

Understanding the importance of the pill in shaping childbearing among young women has been hindered by a lack of direct data on pill use. I present new data on pill sales across Swedish localities proximate to the pill's introduction. I use local variation in pill use induced by differences in pharmacy access across localities to estimate the elasticity of teen childbearing to pill use. The patterns in the rich data on pill use indicate the pill was a powerful force for reducing teen childbearing. Full model estimates are large, negative, and highly significant. First-stage estimates quantify the strong relationship between pharmacy access. The analysis provides a laboratory to understand how access to the pill translates into pill use and fertility outcomes when abortion is restricted.

Kelly Ragan is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics at SSE.

This seminar takes place at Stockholm School of Economics, Sveavägen 65, in room 350.
