"Burnout: Women, Work and Economic Consequences"

(with Arash Nekoei, Jósef Sigurdsson)

Abstract

We study the causes and consequences of stress-related occupational illnesses (burnout) using Swedish administrative data linked to clinical diagnoses of sick leaves in 2006-2020. Women, especially single mothers or primary wage earners, are at a disproportionately high risk of burnout. However, both genders suffer from a similar immediate and permanent income loss, reflecting reduced employment and impaired careers. This negative impact spills over to their family, reducing their spousal income and children's human capital (college attendance). The direct cost of sick leave, permanent earnings loss, and spillover effects led to a 2.4\% loss of national labor income in 2019 and 3.9\% in the steady state. Using a mover design, we show that firms and occupations are key contributors to burnout. Moreover, workers with lower stress tolerance are more susceptible to burnout, especially when working high-stress jobs, indicating the significance of sorting. We explore potential remedies by documenting the additional power of frequent surveys to detect burnout and assess the optimal scope of such policies.
