Mini course: Competition and regulation in digital markets

Professor Tommaso Valletti (Imperial College Business School, University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, and CEPR)

There will be two sessions in the mini-course given on Thursday May 12 (13.15-16.00) and Friday May 13 (9.15-12.00) 2022. We’re hoping to do this on premises at the Stockholm School of Economics but experience teaches us to be flexible these days so if Covid situation requires it will be run over Zoom instead.

Digitalization is reshaping many markets and high-profile antitrust cases, hearings and policy proposals relating to platforms, e-commerce, and other related topics are high on policy and research agendas. The mini course will cover two sets of topics: 1) Recent academic findings on the effects of digitalization, and 2) An overview of competition policy cases related to digital markets at the European level. The mini course will review the recent literature and identify possible gaps for future research.

Tommaso Valletti is Professor of Economics at Imperial College Business School and was Chief Competition Economist of the European Commission (Directorate General for Competition) between 2016 and 2019. He has advised numerous bodies, including the European Commission, OECD, and the World Bank on topics such as network interconnection, mobile telephony markets, public procurement, and spectrum auctions. He has published in leading journals in economics and management, such as the American Economic Review, Review of Economic Studies, Management Science and Marketing Science.

The course is open to PhD students or PhD’s in economics and finance – subject to approval. The course is free of charge. There will be a dinner (free!) for course participants on May 12 and a simple lunch on May 13. Register with Rasa Salkauskaite (rasa.salkauskaite@hhs.se) before April 29 and please don't forget to mention any dietary restrictions (the early deadline is to be able to make reservations for the dinner).

There will be no exam and participation does not give any credits. The course is organized by the Stockholm School of Economics and made possible by a grant from the Swedish Competition Authority.

Welcome!
