Female Economists Network at SSE

On Tuesday, April 8th, SSE hosted the Female Economists Network in Stockholm and Uppsala (FENSU) event 2014.

Five female assistant professors discussed with about 40 female PhD students in Economics and Finance from Stockholm and Uppsala universities their experience of PhD studies, job market participation, career planning and research within academia.

The panel discussion was moderated by Vesna Corbo (Sveriges riksbank) and the main contribution was given by Teodora Borota (Uppsala University), Anna Dreber Almenberg (SSE), Ina Ganguli (SITE), Heléne Lundqvist (SU), Jenny Simon (SITE).

The speakers highlighted the qualities which are usually appreciated within academic jobs and advised future job market candidates on how to deal with the job search process: one of the most stressful period, but full of excitement and networking as never before and after.

The speakers shared with the students their personal experience and, in particular, they focused on how having a career in academia differs from others job in terms of work-life balance.

Beyond many precious information, one of the nicest take-home messages from the event is that, besides difficulties and obstacles one may encounter ahead in the academic journey, being a PhD student is one of the rare moments in life in which one can sincerely ask yourself what you would like to work on and actually do it.
