In Memoriam: Karl G Jungenfelt
Kalle was born in 1931 and defended his theses at Stockholm University in 1966. He joined the Stockholm School of Economics in 1972 when he was appointed to the A O Wallenberg chair in Economics. Kalle stayed with SSE until his retirement in 1996.
He made several important contributions in his research, much of which focused on economic growth and structural change. More than anything though Kalle will be remembered as an outstanding mentor and institution builder. He was head of the Economics department for many years and was a driving force in shaping and modernizing the PhD education.
The list of his former PhD students reads like a who's who for much of Swedish economic policy and research in economics. Many of these former students testify to a relation that was not only intellectually vibrant but also deeply warm and personal.
His inquisitive mind and dedication to foster new generations continues to inspire us.
