MBA first choice when finishing hockey career

After 16 years, Swedish national team hockey player Jonas Andersson decides to finish his professional career. He will now study an Executive MBA at the Stockholm School of Economics.

The studies will be helpful to Jonas Andersson when developing a business he recently started with former professional tennis players Jonas Björkman and Henrik Söderberg, and Måns Zelmerlöw.

Jonas Andersson is the first to study an Executive MBA at the Stockholm School of Economics after completing a MDA (Management Diploma for Athletes) - Cruyff Institute’s tailored management training for elite athletes. Peter Forsberg, Therese Borssén, Per-Ulrik Johansson and Magdalena Forsberg, among other Swedish athletes, have also studied at Cruyffs Institute after finishing their careers.

− It is very inspiring and fun to train athletes. They have the drive and ability to focus and serve as inspiration to other students. Jonas is one of the most ambitious students who has ever studied the MDA program and we wish him all the best as he continues his studies, says Anders Sewerin, founder of Cruyff Institute in Sweden.

34-year-old Jonas Andersson from Lidingö has played ice hockey at an elite level since 1999. He can look back at a career in KHL, NHL and Tre Kronor.

− When I was admitted to the MBA studies at the Stockholm School of Economics, the decision to finish my hockey career was easy. The MDA training at the Cruyff Institute has been great, a fun introduction that made me even more motivated to continue my studies, says Jonas Andersson.

Jonas Andersson has during the past nine years, alongside his professional career, started and managed the company Nordic Ice together with Henrik Söderberg. They have together with the former professional tennis player Jonas Björkman and the artist Måns Zelmerlöw also opened the first indoor center for padel in Stockholm, PDL Center in Frihamnen. Padel, which is a great sport mainly in South America and Spain, is now becoming more popular in the rest of Europe.

− I want to take the experience I have from several years as a professional abroad and the qualities that made me come far in hockey, into entrepreneurship and my next career. Of course there are knowledge gaps to fill and I am therefore really looking forward to studying at the Stockholm School of Economics, says Jonas Andersson.

− Ever since I first met Jonas, I was convinced he has the potential to become a successful businessman. I believe the combination of running his own company and acquiring theoretical perspectives from studying will take Jonas to the next level, says Martin Carlsson-Wall, Assistant Professor, Stockholm School of Economics.
