Per Strömberg, Professor of Finance at the Stockholm School of Economics, has been elected Vice President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. His election follows a significant period of service on the Nobel committee for the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Science, where he contributed for eleven years and led as chairman for three. 

In his new role and as an economist, Strömberg is committed to advocating for the social sciences within the Academy's leadership.  

“It feels important to protect the social sciences,” Strömberg said. “The social sciences can contribute many important perspectives on some of today's most burning questions, even if we as researchers sometimes have different challenges than the natural scientists.” 

Strömberg's research has covered areas such as venture capital, financial contracts between venture capitalists and entrepreneurs, and the impact of carbon pricing on firm emissions. He has also been a long-standing member of the economics prize committee. 

Each year, the academy is responsible for awarding the Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry, the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, the Crafoord Prize, the Sjöberg Prize, and several other awards.  

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is one of the royal academies of Sweden. The Royal Academies are independent organizations, founded on Royal command, that act to promote the arts, culture, and science in Sweden. 

Taking over from Magnus Berggren, Strömberg joins two other vice presidents, Ulf Ellervik and Sven Lidin, in assisting the President of the Academy, Birgitta Henriques Normark.
