Diogo Mendes awarded for outstanding teaching in Corporate Finance

Stockholm School of Economics is proud to congratulate Assistant Professor Diogo Mendes for being awarded for his exceptional contribution to the Corporate Finance course within the MSc in International Business program at SSE.

Teaching has long been a passion for Diogo, who continuously strives to improve the course, meet the diverse needs of students, and foster an inclusive learning environment.

"There is no greater reward than being recognised for something you genuinely love doing," says Diogo.

For Diogo, teaching Corporate Finance goes far beyond delivering technical content. One of the key components of his approach is bridging theory with real-world practice, ensuring that students understand how financial concepts apply across industries and society at large. Through the discussion of current events and insights from guest speakers, he brings the material to life for students from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds.

"I recognise that not every student will directly use the technical content in their careers, especially in a program as diverse as ours. My goal is not just technical mastery; it is about fostering relevance, critical thinking, and perspective," Diogo explains.

The recognition highlights Diogo's exceptional ability to engage a highly diverse student group, ranging from those with no prior background in finance to those holding a Bachelor's degree in the subject. What was once considered an almost insurmountable challenge has been met with clarity, inclusivity, and academic rigour.

When asked what advice he would give to aspiring teachers, Diogo emphasizes the importance of understanding students’ ambitions and needs.

"Teaching is not just about delivering content—it is about making it meaningful, building connections, and showing them that we are invested in their journey. Let's talk to them, listen carefully, and be willing to adapt. The impact we can have goes far beyond the classroom."

We warmly congratulate Diogo on this well-deserved recognition and thank him for his continued dedication to excellence in teaching.
