"The people are the most important at Swedish House of Finance"
Oct. 19, 2016
After getting her PhD from Stockholm School of Economics, Egle Karmaziene has left Swedish House of Finance for the Netherlands – to work as assistant professor at the University of Groningen.
What will you do in your new role?
“I have two responsibilities. One is related to teaching, I will teach courses in corporate finance and supervise students for their master thesis. The other role is doing my research. My main two fields of interest are related to financial intermediation and entrepreneurship.”
What appealed to you in this job?
“I like the Netherlands, and the faculty are great. There are people here who are interested in the same things as I am, there is a common ground for us to work together – which I can benefit from and contribute to. Also, Netherlands is a very family friendly country. I love going to the parks and petting zoos with my family here.
Tell us about your current research.
“In my thesis I had four papers – three were in the field of financial intermediation and one in entrepreneurship. Together with Fatemeh Hosseini I measure savings dynamics, and investigate reasons for savings around the start of a business. Together with Valeri Sokolovski I show that when traders short sell exchange traded funds instead of individual stocks, it affects supply of ETFs and market quality of the underlying stocks.
In my third paper I empirically show that financial analysts benefit from the abnormal trading volume that their recommendations generate. In the fourth paper I show that market mood affects the way that investors allocate their capital to and across open-end funds.
This quarter I am not teaching so I can continue working on these papers, presenting in conferences and try to publish them. I also have some ideas for future projects with people in the Netherlands.”
What’s your most important take-away from the years at Swedish House of Finance?
“People. I was impressed by the quality of research and teaching at SHOF. I had a wonderful supervisor Mariassunta Giannetti, who taught me a lot. So I think that the people at Swedish House of Finance are the most important – it’s not about other things, it’s about the people. And because of the people I will always have a good impression of Stockholm.”
