BeLonging - the program

Cultural heritage, ownership, displacement and return, and ongoing forces of colonization are some of the themes in this exhibition. To explore them and the questions they give rise to, and learn from and with artists and experts in various fields, we have put together a program of art talks and a museum visit connected to the exhibition. The program is open for all and runs through November and early December.

The exhibition BeLonging: Michael Rakowitz and the Mesopotamian Collection explores the notions of belonging and longing, of both people and objects as they move and are moved from one place to another. It reflects on cultural loss and continuity, on art and cultural heritage, on displacement and repatriation. Through displaced objects from ancient Mesopotamian – now in Medelhavsmuseet’s collection – we familiarize ourselves with ancient places and people. Meanwhile, internationally acclaimed artist Michael Rakowitz shines light on the tense relationship between the Global West and the Middle East. He strives to complicate the current narrative around cultural heritage, ongoing forces of colonization, as well as colonial and postcolonial discourses. Together they create an intriguing interplay, in which exhibited artworks and objects add meaning to each other.
