In a new policy paper, CELE Research Assistant Axel Norgren examines the impact of the Swedish School Inspectorate’s regular inspections of schools between 2017 and 2021 for pupil’s study results (share of students with passing grades year 9). The results of the study indicate that public school inspections have, at best, a negligible effect on the schools' observable study results. These results mirror those of international studies in the United Kingdom and elsewhere which examines the effects of school inspections, which often consists of ensuring that schools adhere to specific legislation and public requirements on schools, requirements that are not necessarily correlated with school pupil’s educational achievements.
