Project in Uganda receives the Gun and Einar Larsson Stiftelse Scholarship

SSE student David Graf has been awarded the Gun and Einar Larsson Stiftelse Scholarship 2025 (GELS) for his project “Agribusiness in Uganda”. The project aims to support Ugandan farmers and agripreneurs by introducing modern Swedish agtech solutions.

The Gun and Einar Larsson Stiftelse Scholarship offers outstanding students at the Stockholm School of Economics an opportunity to create and realize a practical project a practical project abroad of the student’s own design. The aim of the scholarship is to equip the recipient with tools and experiences outside of the academic realm that will benefit the student’s education and professional aspirations.

Agribusiness in Uganda

David Graf was awarded the scholarship for his project “Agribusiness in Uganda.” He has had a long-standing interest in agtech innovation and aims to support Ugandan farmers and agripreneurs by introducing modern Swedish agtech solutions. Moreover, he hopes to encourage the adoption of sustainable and innovative farming practices in Uganda.

“With his passion, ambition, and great drive, David demonstrates the qualities that characterize an outstanding SSE student. David’s strong profile in combination with a clear and feasible project idea to support Ugandan farmers andagripreneurs, made him stand out in the competition from a dozen other strong applications. His project has the potential to put theory into practice as well as being a boost for David to gain valuable experiences for a career in the field” says Lars Strannegård, SSE President.

The project focuses on bridging the gap between Ugandan agripreneurs and Swedish agtech companies to address key challenges in Uganda’s agricultural sector. Despite being a vital part of the economy, employing over 70% of the population, Uganda's agriculture suffers from low productivity, outdated practices, and poor access to modern technology.

Boosting productivity and profitability

Many young Ugandans avoid agriculture due to its perceived lack of innovation and financial incentives, contributing to one of the highest youth unemployment rates in Sub-Saharan Africa. By leveraging the strengths of Swedish agtech and aligning them with Uganda’s specific agricultural challenges, there is potential not only to boost productivity and profitability in the sector but also to engage more young Ugandans in agriculture.

“My project aims to serve as a bridge between Ugandan agripreneurs and Swedish agtech firms, facilitating the exchange of knowledge, technology, and resources to foster sustainable agricultural practices that can withstand the pressures of climate change, while offering new economic opportunities for Ugandan youth,” says David Graf.
