Seminar in Economics | with Andreas Ek
Welcome to this Higher Seminar in Economics organized by the Department of Economics, SSE. The seminar speaker is Andreas Ek, Lund University who will present "Assessing Market-Level Discrimination of Immigrants"
Abstract
The economic integration of migrants is plagued by persistent earnings disparities, across different migrant groups as well as compared to natives, suggesting that various forms of discrimination may play an important role. This paper explores wage and occupational discrimination using Swedish matched employer-employee data. First, it quantifies wage discrimination by comparing workers' contributions to output, as measured by production function estimation, with their wages. Second, it assesses occupational discrimination by examining relative productivity and wages conditional on occupation, as well as differences across occupations. The findings include some evidence of wage discrimination against Asian-born men and women from MENA origins. The strongest indications of positional discrimination are in entry-level and low-skill jobs, consistent with a view that migrants face the highest risk of unfair barriers during their entry into the labor market.
