Nobel Laureate Simon Johnson's insights on "Strengthening sanctions against Russia"

On December 12, 2024, the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE) hosted a public seminar featuring Professor Simon Johnson, co-recipient of the 2024 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. The event centered on international sanctions against Russia and strategies to curtail its capacity to wage war in Ukraine.

Professor Johnson, renowned for his influential work on mechanisms like the oil price cap, delivered insightful perspectives on enhancing sanctions' effectiveness within the framework of international law and economics. His remarks underscored the broader implications for European security and economic stability amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Following his address, Maria Perrotta Berlin, SITE’s sanctions project lead, presented SITE's latest research on the subject and facilitated a thought-provoking Q&A session involving sanctions experts from Ukraine and Sweden.

The seminar brought together policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders, fostering meaningful dialogue on the role of economic policy tools in addressing geopolitical challenges.

Professor Johnson’s expertise, informed by his groundbreaking research and tenure as Chief Economist at the IMF, offered invaluable insights into the intersection of macroeconomic policy, institutional frameworks, and global stability.
