SITE Seminar | Targeting attitudes to combat sexual harassment - a randomized intervention in the Norwegian military
Working paper title: Targeting Attitudes to Combat Sexual Harassment - A Randomized Intervention in the Norwegian Military
By Olle Folke, Department of Government, Uppsala University
Abstract
We develop an information-based intervention against sexual harassment and test its efficiency in a randomized control trial. The intervention seeks to affect attitudes that make the organizational climate permissive of harassment. Specifically, it provides information on other people’s tolerance towards sexual harassment and women’s relative job performance. We randomize the intervention across small rooms with military recruits in the boot camp of the Norwegian military. The intervention caused a long-lasting reduction in tolerant attitudes toward sexual harassment. The impact of the intervention on harassment prevalence is negative and large but statistically insignificant.
