How will Sweden regain innovation leadership in the AI era? - 03 June 2024
Following Microsoft's record investment in Sweden's AI infrastructure, the House of Innovation and the SSE Tech Initiative hosted a keynote and panel discussion with Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft at the Stockholm School of Economics. Alongside Brad Smith, the panel featured prominent Swedish thought-leaders in AI and digital policy: Darja Isaksson, Director General of Vinnova, Åsa Zetterberg, Managing Director of TechSverige, and Martin Svensson, Managing Director of AI Sweden.
Sweden is facing numerous urgent societal challenges, such as climate change, limited resources for welfare services, geopolitical uncertainties, and the safeguarding of democracy. In response, the Swedish government adopted a national AI strategy in 2018, aiming to position the country as a leader in AI for welfare and competitiveness.
Brad Smith noted that while Sweden has not led in developing AI models, it can become a leader in implementing AI technology effectively. He stressed demystifying AI to make it accessible and understandable across all sectors. The panel, moderated by Daniel Akenine, National Technology Officer at Microsoft Sweden, suggested that Sweden integrate diverse skills from fields like humanities and economics to foster holistic innovation. By focusing on practical application and responsible AI adoption, Sweden can harness AI for significant societal benefits. Encouraging curiosity and providing venture capital and affordable housing will help attract talent and position Sweden as a global leader in AI innovation.
Magnus Mähring, Director of the House of Innovation, concluded with remarks on the role of higher education in supplying the talent and expertise necessary to sustain entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystems.
