Brown Bag seminar in Economics | Nikhilesh Prakash
Welcome to the Brown Bag Seminar in Economics organized by the Department of Economics, SSE. The seminar speaker is Nikhilesh Prakash, SSE who will present "Course Prescription: How Medical Colleges Drive High School Decisions in India"
Abstract
I study how the opening of a medical college influences the educational decisions of school students living in the same district. Using the staggered introduction of medical colleges across districts in India, I find that when a district receives such a college for the first time, students increase their educational attainment by 0.23 years and are 4.5 percentage points more likely to complete high school. These effects are driven by rural residents and are larger for girls than for boys. The effects are concentrated among households living within 50 km of the new college. Finally, I find that urban boys respond to the new medical school by studying science in high school in greater proportions.
Nikhilesh Prakash is a Ph.D. student at SSE, in the Department of Economics.
This seminar takes place at Stockholm School of Economics, Sveavägen 65, in room A542.
