Disrupted Dynamics: The long-term consequences of market deregulation
Fairouz Hussien
My research examines the long-term effects of market deregulation on market dynamics. Guided by the overarching question, "How does market deregulation shape market dynamics over time?", the study explores how market actors develop and enact shared understandings following a major market deregulation and how these enactments contribute to reshaping market structures and behaviors. This approach emphasizes agency in constructing new market realities and positions deregulation as a multi-dimensional process influenced by firms and institutions. Empirically, the project a qualitative case study of the market developments following the U.S. Airline Deregulation Act of 1978. Findings so far reveal that 1. the very definition of market dynamics remains elusive, and 2. deregulation not only alters the competitive landscape but also affects the broader social fabric of market interactions, challenging traditional assumptions about market efficiency and actor behavior.
