Power swapping: embedding the battery swapping model in the Swedish context
This two-year research project is run by Lei Huang (CMS) together with Anna Dubois and Frida Lind (Chalmers). Battery swapping (BS) is a charging model that decouples battery charging from vehicle use. Compared to fast charging, the advantages of the BS model include: extending battery durability, less use of electricity, increasing energy system security and sufficiency for renewable energy use, easing battery collection and quality control of used batteries for re-use and recycling.
Recognizing the BS model’s potential to address critical sustainability challenges, we aim to investigate the complexities and dynamics of how BS has been, or could be, embedded into evolving systems—such as vehicle operation, energy, and battery circularity systems—within specific market contexts.
The project is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency (grant number P2022-00047).
