Sustainable Finance Lab
The Sustainable Finance Lab (SFL) has been initiated for a more sustainable world through the transformative powers of the financial system and the overarching ambition to foster real change and progress in how financial markets, in Sweden and beyond, engage with and facilitate social and environmental sustainability.
Research in four themes
SFL conducts research at the interphase of social and environmental sustainability to advance such metrics, informed by insights from – and dialogue with – industry. The research is divided up into four overarching themes:
-
Systemic risk in an interconnected world
-
Shifting norms to overcome inertia and accelerate action
-
Developing a platform for innovation and transformative capacity
-
Assessing real societal and environmental impact
A transdisciplinary approach
The consortium approach aims to strengthen the transformative force of the financial market to contribute to sustainable development. The Lab pursue this goal by conducting rigorous, high-impact, transdisciplinary research and by providing an interactive hub to promote transformation and innovation among actors in the financial market ecosystem.
The management team consists of two Center Directors, and four Vice Directors. The six lead investigators represent seven academic institutions which together oversee and develop the research within the Sustainable Finance Lab. However, the work relies on the work of a much larger group of researchers from within the seven organizations, as well as from other institutions.
Partners from industry and civil society include banks and institutional investors; alternative providers of capital (explicitly socially responsible investors); financial innovators and accelerators; influential business associations and market platforms; as well as regulators or providers of ratings/standards, and civil society actors with reach and influence.
Furtermore, the Lab also work with relevant non-financial actors in the real economy, including companies in four sectors identified as having a particularly important role for the economy, while also experiencing an urgent need to transition to sustainable practices.
The Sustainable Finace Lab Sweden is funded in total 47 msek by Vinnova, 2021-2025
Project leader at SSE SIR CSR, is Associate Professor Lin Lerpold, with researchers Professor Ranjula Bali Swain, Dr. Sophie Nachemsson-Ekwall and PhD student Sven-Anders Stegare.
