Co-Evolution of Virtual Entrepreneurial Ecosystems and Social Ventures: The Case of #EUvsVirus Tackling the COVID-19 Pandemic
To tackle grand challenges, recent studies highlight the need to consider the parallel evolution of actor groups and relevant social systems. The fast-growing entrepreneurial ecosystem literature postulates that developing mutually beneficial, dynamic relationships collectively supports each actor individually but also jointly in developing entrepreneurial solutions to grand societal challenges. However, studies so far assume that entrepreneurial ecosystem actors are located within geographically defined contexts, regardless of the global dimension of the challenge. Developing the concept of virtual entrepreneurial ecosystem, we ask: How do a virtual entrepreneurial ecosystem and entrepreneurial ventures coevolve in tackling grand challenges? We conducted an explorative case study on #EUvsVirus, a virtual entrepreneurial ecosystem emerging in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Our multi-method and longitudinal analysis of interviews, ethnographic insights, observation, and projects’ work documents and artifacts reveal changing network relations among ecosystem actors in the co-evolution of 10 social venture projects and the virtual entrepreneurial ecosystem.
