The Economics of Biodiversity: Implications for policy and practice
In February 2021, the UK HM Treasury released the Independent Review on the Economics of Biodiversity led by Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta (The Economics of Biodiversity: The Dasgupta Review). The influential report presents a comprehensive economic framework for biodiversity. It calls for changes in how we think, act and measure economic success to protect and enhance our prosperity and the natural world, focusing on action needed across three areas:
- Ensuring humanity’s demands on nature do not exceed supply
- Changing how economic success is measured beyond GDP
- Transforming institutions in the financial and educational fields
Two years after the publication of the Dasgupta Review, the Mistra Center for Sustainable Markets (Misum) welcomes Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta from the University of Cambridge, the report lead, for an in-person seminar at the Stockholm School of Economics. Prof. Dasgupta discussed key findings from the report as well as current progress on integrating biodiversity in economic, financial, and education systems in Sweden and internationally.
A panel discussion moderated by Dr Mia Horn af Rantzien followed with speakers from academia, the finance sector, and Swedish policymaking. The conversations linked to recent international discussions on biodiversity, particularly the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) at the 2022 United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15).
