Reimagining capitalism: How to measure performance in a new moral economy
Widespread social inequalities, environmental degradation, and democratic instability have led scholars, progressive business leaders and civil society alike to advocate for a radical reform of capitalism, seeking to re-embed the economy into society.
What role do businesses play in reshaping capitalism towards a fairer and more sustainable economic system? One key element is redefining the purpose of the firm, shifting away from maximizing profits and shareholder returns and towards actively addressing social and ecological challenges. Authentic, purpose-driven enterprises are what this year’s keynote speaker, Prof. Rebecca Henderson (Harvard Business School), refers to as moral firms, committed to prosocial and pro-environmental goals.
The Misum Forum 2023 will bring together multi-disciplinary organizational research as well as insights from business practice to explore how mission-led firms can support the systemic transformation of capitalism as we currently know it towards a moral political economy.

Professor Rebecca Henderson, John and Natty McArthur University Professor, Harvard Business School
Prof. Rebecca Henderson is one of only 25 individuals to hold the esteemed title of University Professor at Harvard University. She is also a research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a fellow of both the British Academy and American Academies of Arts and Sciences.
This year's Misum Forum theme exploring the private sector's role in 'purpose-driven' capitalism is inspired by Prof. Henderson's work, especially her acclaimed 2020 publication, "Reimagining Capitalism in a World on Fire".

Jan's research is oriented towards understanding the role of management technologies and financial controls within organizational contexts and their effects on society more broadly.

Anette's recent research focuses on how various industries understand and frame climate change, and how businesses can utilize novel accounting tools to manage their decarbonization strategies.
Prof. Juliane Reinecke, Professor of Management Studies Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.
Juliane's research focuses on how transnational governance institutions emerge and evolve as a result of the interactions of multiple stakeholders to promote more just and sustainable forms of globalization in global supply chains, but also organizations in general.
