CELE Higher Seminar: Anders Jönsson (Kristianstad University)

Going Gradeless

Abstract: Grades can have a strong influence on students’ learning and motivation. The nature and severity of this influence may differ, however, and the detrimental effects of grading are most pronounced for low-performing students. The negative consequences of grading have called the use of grades for pedagogical purposes into question, instead turning attention to the formative aspects of assessment. Still, there is a lack of knowledge about what happens when teachers stop providing grades to students. Removing grades can have several positive effects but may also have unwanted or unforeseen consequences for both students and teachers, especially in a context that relies heavily on assessments for summative purposes. This project therefore aims to investigate both possibilities and challenges of “going gradeless” in different educational settings. The project is part of a Nordic cooperation with NTNU in Trondheim, Norway, and Copenhagen Business School in Denmark.
