Seminar in Economics | Andreas Moxnes

Department of Economics welcomes you to a seminar with Andreas Moxnes, University of Oslo, who will present "Trade From Space: Shipping Networks and The Global Implications of Local Shocks".

Welcome to this Higher Seminar in Economics organized by the Department of Economics, SSE. The seminar speaker is Andreas Moxnes, University of Oslo, presenting "Trade From Space: Shipping Networks and The Global Implications of Local Shocks".

Abstract

This paper analyzes international externalities of a local shock to the global shipping network. The 2016 Panama Canal expansion removed a bottleneck in seaborne transportation, allowing much larger ships to pass. Using both reduced-form and structural methods in combination with novel satellite data on the movements of container ships, we find that trade increased significantly among country-pairs using the canal. We find that the global real income gains from the canal expansion were over three times greater than the income gains for Panama itself. An analysis of all links in the network reveals that most links are associated with positive and quantitatively important positive international externalities.

Andreas Moxnes is a Professor of Economics at the University of Oslo. His research interests include international trade and firm responses to globalization, productivity and reallocations in product markets,  as well as the interaction between trade and multinational production.

The seminar takes place at Stockholm School of Economics, Sveavägen 65, room 750.
