House of Innovation researchers Anna Essén and Johan Frishammar receives research grant to study the design of digital services platforms in health care
The research team consists of Anna Essén (SSE), Johan Frishammar (SSE and Luleå U. of Technology) and Javier Cenamo (Lund U.) The research team has received 4 200 000 SEK from the Kamprad foundation to conduct their research project.
The research project will be carried out in collaboration with Pensionärernas riksorganisation PRO, Kry.se, Mindoktor.se, SKL, Region Norrbotten och eHälsomyndigheten
The research project aims to explore the key drivers and barriers of adoption of platform-based health services for elderly patients with complex needs, and how healthcare providers can use different types of platforms to better fulfill the needs of such patients.
The research team will draw upon the platform approach (Thomas et al., 2014). At least in theory, different digital platforms enable improved coordination among the different agents involved in health care, e.g. public authorities, platform owners, doctors and patients (Aceto et al., 2018). However, despite the emergence of these platforms, many patients and doctors are not exploiting their
potential benefits fully and call for subsequent improvements in health care services (Mann et al., 2015). The research team will study platforms developed by old and new entrants to the healthcare industry such as kry, MinDoktor etc. to analyze the different configuration of platform designs and how they create different prerequisites for data-driven service improvement and innovation.
‘This is a great opportunity to learn from the ”disruptive” “digital” actors in Swedish healthcare,’ says Anna Essén, Research Fellow at SSE House of Innovation. ’I think we can learn a lot from how these actors in the periphery have innovated and scaled new services, and how theory can inform an analysis of the implications of different designs. Platform thinking is needed in healthcare.’
Anna Esssén is a Research Fellow at SSE House of Innovation and part of SCDI - Swedish Center for Digital Innovation.
Johan Frishammar is a professor of entrepreneurship at Luleå University of Technology and Affiliated Research Fellow at SSE House of Innovation.
Javier Cenamo is a post-doctoral researcher at Lund University.
