Russia’s external economic links—challenges and opportunities

Russia’s external economic links are too heavily focused on exchanging natural resources for consumption and investment goods, but oil creates too much uncertainty and is not a sustainable driver of growth for Russia or the world. What are the challenges and opportunities for growth in Russia?

SITE’s director Torbjörn Becker made a presentation "Russia’s external economic links—challenges and opportunities" at the international conference ”Evolution of International Trading System: Prospects and Challenges”. The conference was organised by the Economics Department at the Saint Petersburg State University on October 20-21.

The presentation details Russia’s oil dependence and economic links to the EU and Sweden. Presentation explained the foreign direct investment in Russia, Swedish and Russian ties and how Russia would get along without oil.
