“The Soviet millennial kingdom lasted for twenty years”.
It’s been a hundred years since the October Revolution in 1917, a revolution that brought an almost religious faith in a bright future, with dreams of a fairer world order. Lennart Samuelson, Affiliated Researcher at the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE), writes about the new book "The house of government: A saga of the Russian revolution" by Russian-American historian Yuri Slezkine, where the young Soviet state and everyday life after the utopian dreams faded are portrayed.
Despite some objections to Slezkine’s framework of interpretation, Samuelson describes Slezkine’s work as a magnificent piece that undoubtedly broadens the views of the Soviet state’s early history and encourages new reflections. Among other things, Samuelson praises Slezkine for broadening the knowledge of the transformation of Moscow’s cityscape in the 1930’s through his thorough research and portrayal of the residential complex in central Moscow.
