PhD student among the most influential figures in the Swedish retail sector

Nina Åkestam, PhD Student at the Department of Marketing and Strategy at the Stockholm School of Economics, has been ranked as one of the most influential and powerful persons in the Swedish retail sector by the publications Market and Icanyheter.

Nina does research on the positive extended effects of advertising, meaning how advertising's themes and images affect people beyond their relationship to the advertised brand. She is particularly interested in the potential advantages of diversity themes and norm-breaking advertising.

Why is your research so influential?

"As a researcher with a background in the ad industry, I have always loved debating the impact of advertising and marketing in society. Since I started doing research I have used my social media platforms (such as Facebook and Instagram) as well as public lectures and columns, to share what I learn, both from my own research and from others. Apparently there is a huge demand for this kind of knowledge - you just need to put it out there in an accessible form. Also, I spend a lot of time answering questions and comments from my followers. Having a dialogue is a great way to make an impact."

The retail publications Market and Icanyheter have for the second consecutive year ranked the 68 most powerful CEOs, managers, significant events and business owners in Sweden.

In addition to Nina Åkestam, the ranking list contains several SSE Alumni such as: Freddy Sobin, CEO Consortio Fashion Group, Magdalena Gerger, CEO Systembolaget, Johan Kleberg, CEO Adlibris, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, CEO Klarna, Stefan Ingves, Governor, Riksbanken and Magdalena Andersson, Minister for Finance
