Invaluable insights at the CIVICA Honours Seminars

The CIVICA Honours Seminars offer an immersive and intensive 3 to 5 days learning experience to master's students across the CIVICA alliance twice a year. SSE was the host of this summer’s seminar with the exciting theme "Changing the World through Negotiations and leadership".

The seminars focus on a deep dive into crucial global topics, promoting interdisciplinary and transnational approaches, and strengthening common European values. As a unique academic initiative held bi-annually, they provide an unparalleled opportunity for students to engage, network, and foster a shared sense of belonging within the CIVICA community, all while enriching their academic and personal development.

Assistant Professor Andrew Schenkel at the Department of Management and Organizations at SSE led the seminars, where 17 master students participated from CIVICA and Ukrainian universities conducted intensive negotiations training. There were numerous guest speakers including Sweden’s Ambassador to Finland and future UN Ambassador, Sweden’s Climate Ambassador and the General Secretary of the World Childhood Foundation which contributed to student learning.

"The workshop was highly appreciated by participants", says Dr. Andrew Schenkel, who was happy with the outcome of the seminar and the interest the students were showing. "More than 70% of participants fully agreed that the seminar contributed positively to their personal/academic/professional growth which supports SSE’s vision of being a world-class international business school based in Sweden", he concludes.

Invaluable insights for students

One of the core objectives of the CIVICA Honours Seminars is to offer master's students the chance to come together, build networks, and foster relationships that span across Europe. As the seminars combine curricular activities with cultural and social activities, it’s allowing participants to immerse themselves in the culture of the host city or country, and to connect with peers, faculty, and professionals, creating a vibrant community of forward-thinking individuals.

MSc student Yu Li of SSE was one of the participating students.

"Negotiation is a crucial skill in today’s world, and this seminar provided hands-on framework and tactics that I’ll carry forward in my career. From exploring the artwork at Moderna Museet to engaging in 10 intense negotiation simulations related to M&A and beyond, the practical insights were invaluable", she says.
