2018 AFSSE Scholarship recipient
2020 Fall Update
It is hard to believe that it has been over two years since I started at SSE. During this time, I have had an incredible experience at SSE and have gained so much both academically and personally. This opportunity made possible by the American Friends of SSE scholarship enabled me to take the risk and move to Sweden as I had been dreaming of for several years. Thank you so much for your contributions – it has made a great difference to me and I am motivated to pass the goodwill forward to help others however I can.
In addition to coursework, I have tried to stay active in the student association, participating in the Student Nobel Night Cap event in 2018, the Student Ambassador Program, and the American Association. Since I am also an alumnus of the Swedish Program and it was important for me to do more with American students at SSE, I tried to involve myself in the activities that helped American exchange students get closer to Swedish culture. During my time, however, the biggest takeaway for me has been the people who I have met. Ranging from Swedes to non-Swedes and bachelor to masters students, I have met so many intelligent and inspiring people who motivate me to do better and from whom I have learned so much about how to think about the world. Opening my view of the world is invaluable and I am so grateful for this greater cultural understanding.
From a career perspective, I always had the ambition to stay and work in Sweden after my studies and SSE has opened opportunities here. In fact, a classmate helped refer me to my current role and my experience through the XTM program helped me make my case for the position. Now I am working with the consumer insights department for Unilever in the Nordics and will transition into leading the Nordic team shortly. Though I did not initially expect to return to a larger FMCG company, I am very happy in my role because I can blend my past experience with newly acquired local market knowledge and agile innovation principles from school. At Unilever, I continue to learn through projects and formal trainings all while supporting brands with purpose.
Overall, I am fortunate that I have been able to say “yes” to the opportunities that I find most important these past few years and so much of that has been due to the American Friends of SSE scholarship. It has been an unforgettable experience that has shaped who I am now.
