Welcome to Ceremony of 2024, September 21

The Installation of New Professors and Conferment of Doctoral Degrees is one of the largest ceremonial occasions, and is a celebration for those who have become professors and those who have received PhDs during the past years. At the ceremony, academic achievements and merits are celebrated and acknowledged.

At the banquet, a three-course menu with wine is served, along with speeches and entertainment. Afterwards, coffee will be served in the Blue Hall and the dancing commence. 

Dresscode: White tie/evening dress, or business casual for those attending only the ceremony.

Main participants in the ceremony

  • The Conferrer: The Conferrer is the person conferring the doctoral degrees. They must be a professor and hold a doctorate. This years Conferrer is Professor Per Strömberg. 
  • The President of SSE: The installation of professors is done by the President of SSE, professor Lars Strannegård. It is a way of welcoming new professors to the faculty and to the school.
  • Doctor Jubilaris: A jubilee doctor is a person who received their PhDs fifty years ago, in 1973 and 1974 respectively. 
  • Doctor Honoris Causa: An honorary doctors degree is awarded to a person, from Sweden or abroad, who has made a notable contribution to their field of expertise - either through academic acheivements or the business community.
  • Doctores Iuvenes: The latin term refers to "young doctors", and are individauals who has completed their post-graduate eduacation and publicly defended their doctoral thesis. Before the ceremony, they are referred to as promovendi, and after the ceremony promoti. 
  • Installandi: Installandi is the latin word for new professors that are inaugurated into their new tenures. After the ceremony, they are referred to as Installati. 

SSE's symbols of academia

At the Conferment ceremony, the new PhDs receive their symbols of honour: a hat, a ring and a diploma. 

  • The Doctoral hat - a symbol of freedom and power: 
    All doctors at SSE are conferred with hat. It is black, pleated, and featured with the SSE-symbol in gold. 
  • The Ring - a symbol of loyalty to the discipline: 
    The doctoral ring is made of gold, and symbolizes the loyalty of the individual receiving the degree to their discipline. 
  • The Diploma - a certificate of the conferment.
