1. Describe your role and what it is that you do overall and on a day-to-day basis.
As an Assistant Professor of Finance at Nova SBE, my role primarily revolves around three key areas: research, teaching, and university service activities. As a course instructor, I am responsible for delivering a course in Asset Management to our MSc students in the spring semester. I also supervise students writing their theses. Moreover, I participate in departmental activities; currently, I am co-organizing our seminar series. However, most of my time is allocated towards research.
2. What is the attraction of doing research?
One of the most compelling aspects of doing research is the freedom it offers. As a researcher, you have the unique opportunity to explore the questions and challenges that fascinate you the most. This autonomy allows you to delve deep into topics of your choosing. The attraction of doing research in the field of finance is the pursuit of understanding how markets operate. It's about uncovering truths that not only advance academic knowledge but also have practical implications, potentially influencing policy and investment strategies. The dynamic nature of financial markets makes this field particularly exciting, as new challenges and opportunities for discovery arise continuously. This depth of analysis not only satisfies personal curiosity but also enables you to contribute meaningfully to your field, driving forward both theoretical and practical advancements.
3. Why did you choose to do your PhD at SSE?
My decision to pursue a PhD at the Stockholm School of Economics was deeply influenced by my positive experiences during my Master’s program in Finance at SSE. I developed a profound appreciation for the school’s academic rigor and the vibrant community it fostered. SSE has a stellar reputation in finance research and strong connections with the financial industry. Moreover, Stockholm as a city had become a place I deeply admired for its culture and quality of life. After starting my career in consulting in Germany, the desire to delve deeper into academic research grew stronger, and my heart was set on returning to SSE and Sweden. It might seem unusual, but I was so committed to this path that I only applied to SSE for my PhD. I was fortunate and thrilled when I was accepted, allowing me to return to a place that felt like both an academic and personal home.
4. Following the time at SSE, do you have any words of wisdom or advice you would like to share with our current students?
Embrace every opportunity to learn and interact with your peers and professors. The relationships you build and the knowledge you gain here will be invaluable throughout your career. Additionally, stay curious and open-minded; the field of finance is ever-evolving, and the ability to adapt and innovate is crucial. Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of empirical skills and real-world application of your research. Strive to make your work relevant and impactful.
5. What are three words that sum up your time at SSE?
Rigorous, inspiring, transformative.
