Marta Giagheddu

Meet Marta - Economist at Konjunkturinstitutet and PhD in Economics alum.

1. Describe your role and what it is that you do overall and on a day-to-day basis.

As an Economist specializing in macroeconomics models, I develop and use mathematical models to analyze shocks and policies of interest for the Swedish economy. My job involves the use of calibrated and/or estimated models to investigate the effect of shocks and economic policies, to make economic forecasts, and to provide a model-based contribution to the economic policy debate through scenarios analysis. Analytical focus, effective communication, quantitative analysis, and continuous learning are key aspects of my role.

2. What is the attraction of doing research?

Working in research provides the privilege and opportunity to continually expand one's human capital and make contributions to the cutting edge of knowledge, whether within academia, policy institutions, or industry. Maintaining the work's positive challenge, intellectual significance, and inherent rewards is the central feature that drew me to a career in macroeconomic research.

3. Why did you choose to do your PhD at SSE?

I was seeking a place with a well-established history of providing rigorous research opportunities and cultivating a supportive academic community. The former was an aspect I could evaluate before joining the program, which ultimately influenced my decision to accept SSE's offer. The latter, the presence of a nurturing academic community in SSE's Economics Department, is a remarkable advantage and the primary reason why I wholeheartedly recommend it.

4. Following the time at SSE, do you have any words of wisdom or advice you would like to share with our current students?

I encourage current graduate students to remain open to the discovery of their own research interests and passions, to collaborate with their peers and to learn from them by leveraging each other's strengths, and to approach their mentors with humility, actively seeking guidance and advice from a diverse range of individuals both within and outside academia.

5. What are three words that sum up your time at SSE?

Formative, inspiring, empowering.
