Observatory on Case Study Research in Innovation Management

The main purpose of the Observatory is to assess the state-of-the-art of case study research in the innovation management discipline and to improve the rigor and the quality of the articles using the case study methodology.

The practice of innovation management is developing fast. As new concepts emerge, exploratory studies are needed and case study research is often appropriate. Given the relevance of this methodology for the innovation management discipline, it is important to monitor, evaluate and enhance the quality of case study research.

The first outcome of the Observatory’s research effort is an article that reviews the quality of all of the articles published in five top innovation management journals (Research Policy, Technovation, Journal of Product Innovation Management, R&D Management and Technological Forecasting & Social Change) over 20 years (1997-2016). The article, published on the Journal of Product Innovation Management, can be downloaded for free by clicking here.

To objectively assess the quality of the case study articles, an evaluation template termed CASET (case study evaluation template) was developed, which includes ten quality criteria.

If you are a researcher who wants to assess and enhance the quality of your case study research, if you are a reviewer who wants to make your peer-review process more consistent and robust, you can download the evaluation template here.

An extended version of CASET, which includes more detailed information on how the template can be applied to assess the quality of case study articles, can be downloaded here.
